AUTHORS/INSTRUCTORS

Helen Alten, instructor and Manual contributor, is the Northern States Conservation Center Director. She co-authored Numbering Museum Objects (in press). She is a six-year member of the AIC-AAM joint committee on numbering. She taught the six South Dakota collection care video teleconference sessions and has taught over the Iowa network. She publishes quarterly The Collections Caretaker. Ms. Alten graduated from the Institute of Archaeology, Museum of London in Archaeological Conservation and Materials Science. She will teach, write and review material relevant to collection care, handling and materials for numbering.

Faith Bad Bear, instructor and Manual contributor, is assistant curator of ethnology and was NAGPRA consultant at the Science Museum of Minnesota. A Crow tribal member, she is a traditional care consultant who combines an understanding of tribal concerns with museum realities. She will teach about, write and review material relevant to NAGPRA.

Sherry Butcher, instructor and Manual contributor, authored Historic House Museums: Their Care, Preservation, and Management and has been responsible for collections management at two of Minneapolis' largest museums: The Science Museum of Minnesota and the American Swedish Institute. Her teaching experience includes museum issues courses for Hamline, Augsburg and Macalester Colleges; the University of Minnesota; and the Colonial Williamsburg Historical Administration Seminar. She will teach in two video teleconference sessions and one workshop, write and review material relevant to basic documentation and collection management and collection use.

Kathy M.L. Evavold, instructor and Manual contributor, has been archivist at the Otter Tail County Historical Society for 6 years. She oversees records management at a busy archives and library. She is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University's Historical Administration program. She will teach, write and review material relevant to archives management.

Maureen Galvin, instructor and Manual contributor, has been Wright County Historical Society's curator for seven years. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University's Historical Administration program, she will discuss collection management basics in the first session. A member of the Alliance Collections Documentation Standards Committee, she will teach, write and review material relevant to collection management basics.

Lin Nelson-Mayson, instructor and Manual contributor, is the Minnesota Museum of American Art Curator. Her museum redefined its mission and deaccessioned a large part of the collection. Former chair of the AAM-Curators Committee and the Minnesota Association of Museums, she will teach about, write and review material relevant to deaccessioning collections.

Claudia Nicholson, instructor and Manual contributor, is a museum collection management consultant and a curator in the Museum Collections Department at the Minnesota Historical Society. A graduate of the Cooperstown Program in History Museum Studies, Ms. Nicholson has written and taught on collection management topics, working with advisory committees and new audiences, and the implementation of NAGPRA. She will teach, write and review material relevant to collection documentation and disposition.

Chris Schuelke, instructor, Manual contributor, host of the second statewide meeting, and Alliance president, is the Ottertail County Historical Society Director. He has managed three IMLS grants. He will introduce the basics of collection management and its importance, from the viewpoint of director and board. He will compile, write and review material relevant to the Manual. He will oversee project management for the Alliance and ensure that progress and budget reports are sent to IMLS. Finally, he will host a regional meeting at his museum.

MANUAL TEAM
Larry Hutchings, Manual Editor, was Stevens County Historical Society's Curator for 17 years. A founding Alliance board, he completed the research and outline for the Manual and developed a similar manual for Stevens County Historical Society. He will collect documents, work with the instructors to write sections, ensure that the Alliance has written permission to reproduce documents, and work with Mr. Huber to ensure clarity and consistency in the Manual.

Tim Huber, Manual Copy Editor, is a reporter with the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He has been a newspaper reporter and editor for 12 years and the copy editor of regional collection care newsletters for six years. He will edit the Manual and all project publications for clarity, grammar and spelling. He will assist the coordinators in developing press releases for the project.

Eric Swanson, Web site designer, instructor and Manual contributor, is the Institute for Minnesota Archaeology's 'From Site to Story' Webmaster (http://www.fromsitetostory.org/). The first Minnesota Historical Society Webmaster (http://www.mnhs.org), he also built the Northern States Conservation Center (http://www.collectioncare.org) site. He has developed databases for the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office and small museum collections. He has graduate training in Archival Science from Colorado State University's Public History Program. A regular presenter at Minnesota Historical Organization (MHO) conferences, Mr. Swanson will plan, design and implement the Initiative Web site and compile material relevant to computers, databases and the Internet for the Manual. He will teach at one workshop.

CO-COORDINATORS
Susan Garwood-DeLong, project coordinator, is Northfield Historical Society's Director. Former president of the Alliance, she is a member of the Alliance Collections Documentation Standards Committee. She manages staff and budget at her small historical museum, including publicity campaigns and public fundraisers. Her talents at inspiring and coordinating people will be fully used during the project. She will work with Ms. Murray to ensure pre- and post- workshop duties are completed in a timely manner. She will also ensure the Manual is completed as projected.

Each site coordinator is a museum professional representing a region of the state. These people are well connected and capable of bringing 20 other professionals to each video teleconference session.

WEB SITE MANGER/NEWSLETTER EDITOR
Mike Worcester, Web site manager, workshop publicist and Alliance newsletter editor, is the Cokato Museum Director. He designed and posted a Web page for the Alliance. As part of the Initiative, he will work with Mr. Swanson to design the Initiative Web page and will manage the page throughout the project.

FACILITATOR
Bob Gasch, Western Hennepin Pioneers Association

Ellayne Velde-Conyers, Alliance treasurer, is the Lyon County Historical Society Director. For the past 10 years she has been responsible for budget planning, payroll and financial management of the museum. She will oversee payment of contractors, workshop fee collection and the regular completion of IMLS fiscal reports.
